Self-diagnosis of mental illness: ADHD, trauma, depression: I think I have that too


Anyone who is on Instagram, TikTok or Facebook may know this: once again it’s about a mental illness that you’ve never heard of before. Or again about narcissism. Or about supposedly “toxic” partners. And it’s not uncommon for you to ask yourself: Maybe I have that too? Am I “toxic,” at least a little? Or depressed? Do I have ADHD? And what do I do with this suspicion now?

The psychotherapist Umut Özdemir, who provides information on Instagram and Tiktok, answers these questions in the third episode of Do you feel the same way?, ZEIT ONLINE’s new live format on mental health. In the interview, Özdemir explains what you can look out for if you want to find good information about mental illnesses.

He describes when self-diagnosis makes sense and when it is misleading. For example, when patients become too attached to a particular diagnosis – so much so that he sometimes even has to stop therapy with affected people.

Umut Özdemir warns that terms such as “trauma” and “depri” should be used carefully. If they are used excessively, as is often the case on social media, it sometimes puts into perspective the suffering of all those who are really depressed or have experienced trauma.
