Lycium barbarum is a small deciduous shrub of the Solanaceae family, with about 80 species worldwide. In my country, wolfberry is mainly produced in Ningxia, Gansu, Qinghai, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Hebei and other places. Wolfberry is full of treasures. According to its color, it can be divided into red wolfberry, black wolfberry, purple wolfberry, white wolfberry, yellow wolfberry, etc. The most common ones on the market are red wolfberry and black wolfberry.

Wolfberry is rich in polysaccharides, alkaloids, polyphenols and flavonoids. Lycium barbarum leaves, wolfberry flowers and wolfberry root bark are homologous to wolfberry and contain rich active substances, each with its own characteristics. For example, the flavonoid content in wolfberry leaves is much higher than that of wolfberry.

There are also many derivative products of wolfberry, such as wolfberry leaf (bud) tea, wolfberry leaf (bud) vegetable, wolfberry nectar, etc. With the development of the wolfberry deep processing industry, wolfberry products such as wolfberry puree, wolfberry compound pulp, juice and concentrated juice are also available for consumers to choose from.

Choose wisely and save wisely, not blindly

The China Food Science and Technology Society recommends that consumers buy small packages of wolfberries sold by regular merchants or platforms, preferably those newly produced that year. When purchasing, pay attention to the following three aspects:

Take a look at the color. Although the shapes and sizes of wolfberry of different grades and varieties are different, their composition is similar. Red wolfberry is mostly dark red, and black wolfberry is mostly black or black-purple. If you buy wolfberry in bulk, you should pay attention to choose dry and non-clumping ones.

Second, smell the smell. Normally, wolfberries smell fruity. Do not choose wolfberries that have an odor or pungent smell.

Three tastes. Normally, wolfberry tastes sweet, has no obvious astringency, and may have a little bitter taste. During the drying process of wolfberry, edible alkali may be used to treat the waxy layer on the surface of the fresh fruit. Wolfberries treated with alkaline water will have a slightly bitter taste in the mouth, but it does not affect the edible value. In addition, wolfberry has some bitter taste, which is mainly caused by active ingredients such as alkaloids, terpenes, and glycosides in wolfberry, which are beneficial to the human body.

Lycium berries should be stored sealed in a cool, dry place. In summer, it is best to seal the wolfberries and put them in the refrigerator or freeze to prevent discoloration and insect infestation.

Eat scientifically and pay attention to it

Wolfberries can be soaked in water or chewed dry, and can also be used in cooking. Lycium berries can be washed properly before eating or cooking.

When soaking wolfberry in water, the water temperature should be 50°C to 70°C. If it is black wolfberry, it is recommended to control the water temperature at 40°C to 50°C to avoid destroying the anthocyanins. You can also brew the wolfberry and wolfberry leaf (bud) tea together, drink and chew it.

Wolfberry can be paired with red dates, longan, yam, eggs, etc. and used for cooking, soup, baking, etc. When cooking, you should pay attention to putting the wolfberry into the pot first to facilitate the dissolution of relevant ingredients. If you are looking for a better chewing sensation when eating, you can add wolfberry 10-15 minutes before the food is cooked.

Eat wolfberry in moderation. Due to personal differences, some consumers may feel irritated after eating wolfberry. They can reduce the amount and drink more water as appropriate, and eat it step by step.
