Multiple sclerosis, Aism’s Gardensia returns to the streets

On 8, 9 and 10 March, 14 thousand volunteers will be in 5 thousand Italian squares with “Welcome back Gardensia”, the initiative of the Italian Multiple Sclerosis Association (Aism) to support research against this disease. And the choice of the date, International Women’s Day, is not random, because women are the most affected: twice as much as men.

What is multiple sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a neurodegenerative disease. It is chronic, unpredictable and disabling. it is in fact the first cause of neurological disability in young adults after trauma. Furthermore, in approximately half of cases it occurs before the age of 40. In Italy it is estimated that 140 thousand people live with the disease and 3,600 new cases are recorded every year: 1 every 3 hours. Among the pathologies related to MS there is also neuromyelitis optica (NMO), which affects 1,500-2,000 people in our country.

Support research and services

The causes of MS are not yet fully understood, and there is no definitive cure, but immense progress has been made in the last 20 years and today there are many therapies capable of slowing it down and improving the quality of life of those who develop it. All thanks to scientific research. Research that Aism and its foundation, Fism, have supported for over 55 years, just as they support interventions to increase knowledge and respond to the needs of people with MS, promoting services and treatments necessary to ensure a better quality of life and affirming their rights.

Welcome back Gardensia

Everyone can “take to the streets” to contribute by purchasing an Aism gardenia or hydrangea these days: an invitation to donate and spread hope: the funds raised will in fact go towards guaranteeing and strengthening services and supporting scientific research on multiple sclerosis and on related pathologies. It is also possible to book the plants, for a minimum donation of 15 euros each, by contacting the Provincial Section of your city, the list of which can be consulted on the Aism website. Aism ambassador and face of the Gardensia campaign is Chiara Francini, who joins Antonella Ferrari, godmother of Aism also to remember the solidarity between women against a disease that particularly affects the female population.

An app to monitor MS

In addition to purchasing the plants, it is also possible to donate through a solidarity number (45512, all the information here): in this case, we will specifically support the Promopro-Ms Digital Edition project, promoted by FISM to evaluate the progression of the disease and predict its progress. Through an app, volunteers send the perception of their health status and contribute to the personalization of treatments. The algorithm was developed by a team of researchers led by Giampaolo Brichetto, FISM rehabilitation research coordinator and Medical Director of the AISM Liguria Rehabilitation Service.
