Coming to terms with the corona pandemic: The virus in people’s minds

A study shows that many consider the pandemic measures to be pure manipulation. But the other side also remembers wrongly. This is a danger for the future.

The friendly hairdresser no longer fits into these unfriendly times. “We can do it” is the sentence he uses by far the most often in his barbershop on the outskirts of Berlin, often supplemented with a “brother” or “master”. Even if it’s just about hairstyles: This has something to do with the summer of 2015, when Angela Merkel coined this legendary saying and the major social debates had a different tone. Although there is a Babylonian language confusion, the atmosphere is great. Except when the conversation turned to the topic again on a Thursday in the summer of 2023 corona comes: “I’ve been through everything, brother, first vaccination, second vaccination, third vaccination, but if I wouldn’t do it anymore, it’s all shit.” What makes him think like that? “Look around! No Corona!”
