A tiger mosquito implantation discovered for the first time in Normandy, all of France now concerned
No region of mainland France is now an exception. The Regional Health Agency (ARS) announced this Tuesday March 19 that it had detected a tiger mosquito establishment in Normandy. This region was the last still spared from the presence of this insect from South-East Asia.
The discovery was made following analyzes carried out in 2023 in the department of Seine-Maritime. “Following a field survey carried out in September 2023, the ARS confirms the establishment for the first time of this mosquito in Normandy, in the department of Seine-Maritime,” writes the agency in its press release.
“The tiger mosquito thus accelerated its progress on the territory nationally in recent years (…). Normandy was until then the last region of metropolitan France in which the mosquito was not established,” specifies the ARS.
Virus vector
The tiger mosquito can be virus vector such as those of dengue, Zika or chikungunya. “Consult a doctor in the event of suggestive symptoms such as joint/muscle pain, headache, rash with or without fever, conjunctivitis appearing 10 days after the date of your return,” advises the health body.
The agency also indicates that certain simple actions can help fight against the proliferation of tiger mosquitoes, in particular “by removing all places and objects that could contain stagnant water » or “by cleaning the gutters as well as the evacuation manholes”.
